Climate change - the defining challenge of our time!

Image
There have just been two new reports released on the global climate crisis. One was by the IPCC, a UN body that has published such reports every few years since... There was another one, however, this time from the World Meteorological Organization, and this one is worth a second look. It's called 'United in Science.' Maybe the biggest story here is, 'CLIMATE IMPACTS,' hitting harder and sooner than predicted a decade ago. This means that glaciers are melting faster and sea levels are rising faster than we had thought. And rising sea levels imperil millions of lives and livelihoods in coastal regions of  the world's continents and islands. Trees that can fight the climate crisis are going to be more important than ever in our future. National Tree Day!

Image
What could be more natural than, smack-dab in the middle of National Forest Week, the designation of National Tree Day? Most trees, like this fine specimen of Horse Chestnut, are still in their full summer glory. But we won't have to wait long now for the Fall colours to arrive. National Tree Day is being supported and publicized by Tree Canada. Their suggestions for ways to celebrate include: volunteer, plan an event, plant a tree, donate, shop green, and tell your story. Fears of climate crisis stimulate global day of action

Image
It's been billed as a youth climate strike. Just prior to the UN's 2019 Climate Action Summit meeting, student protesters have been pouring into the streets demanding that governments take urgent action to decrease the emission of greenhouse gases and slow the alarming rate of climate change. And it's not just school kids. Employees from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter have also walked off the job to demand action. But loud complaints seldom garner much change without a long-term commitment to lobbying. Most governments, even the most oppressive ones, will eventually respond to effective widely supported public pressure. Tree-lined roadways reduce travellers' stress

Image
There have been many studies showing the positive psychological properties of trees, and this is only one of the most recent. The conclusion arises from research done at the University of Florida by Professor Andrew Koeser. Trees, Koeser has discovered, "enhance the experience of both tourists and residents as they drive to their destinations.” Trees bring both beauty and stress relief to the roadside. One man's symbolic gesture to save trees

Image
According to the Rainforest Action Network, "Indonesia’s rainforests are one of earth’s most biologically and culturally rich landscapes." But at the same time, the survival of these forests are at risk. According to Wikipedia, "Logging and the burning of forests to clear land for cultivation has made Indonesia the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases." An Indonesian man named Medi Bastoni has made a gallant gesture to try to support reforestation efforts and reverse the trend of forest destruction. He walked backwards for 800 km to make his point in a memorable way.
